Anthony Calderbank studied Arabic and Persian at Manchester University, UK. He lived in Cairo from 1982-7, working first as a teacher of English in an Egyptian primary school and then as a teacher of Arabic to foreigners. From 1987-90 he taught Arabic and Arabic English translation at the University of Salford, UK and returned to Cairo in 1990 to work in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the American University. In 2000 he moved to Saudi Arabia to work with the British Council. Since 2008 he has lived in Riyadh, where he is now Deputy Director of the British Council in Saudi Arabia.
Anthony has translated a number of short stories including several in a collection of Palestinian short stories by Nur and Abdulwahab El Messiri entitled Land of Thyme and Stone. Three of his translations of Ala Hlehil were recently published in Unbuttoning the Violin as part of a young Arab writers’ tour of the UK. Other translations include No Place for a Lover in This City byYousef Al-Mohaimeed, Rhadopis of Nubia by Naguib Mahfouz and Gazelle Tracks by Miral El Tahawy.
