Mariam Al-Saedi was born on 4th November 1974 in Al Ain. She gained an English Literature degree from UAE University in 1997, and has since acquired postgraduate certificates in Urban Planning from the American University of Sharjah and in Jerusalem Studies from Aberdeen University in Scotland. She currently works for the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport while building her writing career.
A rising young literary talent, Maryam has published two collections of short stories, one of which was translated into German in 2009. Her short story 'The Old Woman' was recently snapped up for publication in the Denys Johnson-Davies collection In a Fertile Desert, and is a subtle exploration of the claims of the old world and the new as an old woman becomes a source of embarrassment to her more sophisticated children.
